Setting:
In the Marvel universe, there are an uncountable number of different Earths. Each Earth is different with its own history and its own cast of characters. The main Earth where the action takes place is Earth 616. This version of Earth is much like the one we are used to. It has the same countries, the same oceans and most of the same problems. However, it also has several things that set it apart from our Earth. For example, along with all the countries that exist on our Earth, Earth 616 has an extra country called Latveria. Latveria is a little European country ruled by Doctor Doom that is often the center of conflicts on Earth 616. Going to Latveria is like stepping into the past culturally speaking but the future technologically, considering Doom has robots running around all over the place. Then there's Wakanda, a technologically advanced African nation ruled by the Black Panther and Storm of the X Men. Under the sea there's Atlantis, the sunken city of legend that is very real in the Marvel universe and ruled over by a former teammate of Captain America's named Namor. There is also a portion of land in the Antarctic that resembles a prehistoric jungle, complete with dinosaurs and extinct animals, called the Savage Land.
The United States of Earth 616 is more of less the same too, governmentally and culturally. Along with all the features that our Earth's United States government has, Earth 616 also has an organization called SHIELD that often works alongside the President and other government agencies. SHIELD is an acronym for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistics Directorate and is a huge security agency that looks over the whole world. SHIELD has their hands in pretty much everything, from aliens to super weapons to petty international disputes, and no one really knows everything they're doing at any given moment. The agents of SHIELD, highly trained spies and scientists, may even not be completely in the know. There is also SWORD, which is like SHIELD but mainly handles alien threats. HAMMER is another law enforcement and espionage agency that was started by Norman Osborn, a wealthy business man based in New York. It was around after SHIELD momentarily collapsed and before he revealed himself to be completely out of his god damn mind. There's also AIM and HYDRA, which are terrorism organizations both wishing to "improve" humanity by basically killing off anyone who isn't "strong enough".
Below the government agencies are the superheroes, of which there are many. Most heroes on Earth 616 are based in New York. The most famous of these would be the Avengers, a giant team of superheroes formed to combat the world's problems. Carol has been an Avengers for most of her superhero career and is based in New York. Throughout the history of the team, the roster has grown and shrunk. There have been several different teams, including one in California run by Hawkeye and an unofficial one in the Great Lakes region, and there was a time when there were no Avengers at all. There's also the X Men, a team of people born with a mutated gene that gives them superpowers known as mutants. There's X Factor, a team of mutant private investigators, and Heroes For Hire, a team of superheroes who perform tasks for payment. There are several different super teams in Canada, all formed by the Canadian government, and some individual heroes in the UK and Japan. The Starjammers were a group who were basically pirates and explored outer space. Carol was a member of this team for a while before returning to Earth. There are also Norse Gods in Oklahoma, like Thor and Loki and anyone else from Norse mythology. Superheroes, metahumans, mutants and Gods are just a part of life on Earth 616. Most people are used to them. Sometimes they don't necessarily like them but they're used to them.
The New York City of Earth 616 is another difference between it and the Earth we all know. While it is mostly the same, there are some differences that are just hard to miss. For example, in the middle of the city there is a huge tower called Avengers Tower that one of the Avengers teams in New York operates out of. It can be seen from just about anywhere in the city and is impossible to miss because of the huge black structure on top of it. Near Central Park there's Avengers Mansion, which used to belong to the Starks and is now home to yet another team of Avengers. There's the Baxter Building, which is home to the Fantastic Four and frequently the site of really weird alien or scientific occurrences. The Daily Bugle building, home to one of the city's newspapers. The Bugle is actually more of a rag at this point, considering it's usually a forum for its crazy editor J. Jonah Jameson to air his complaints against superheroes. Usually Spider Man, because his hateboner cannot be stopped. Empire State University, a fictional university within the Marvel universe, has its campus in the city. There's a Hellfire Club headquarters across from Central Park and buildings for basically every fictional company that exists on Earth 616 (Stark Industries, OsCorp, HAMMER etc).
The Wakandan and Latverian embassies are also located in New York, along with the other international embassies that you'll find in the real version of New York. Out on Rykers Island is The Raft, a super secure prison for superhuman criminals that equipped with top of the line security systems and power dampeners. Besides the buildings, there's also the fact that Marvel New York has the habit of getting destroyed at least once a month and then somehow being perfectly fine the next week. There are also always superheroes whizzing around and a stupid amount of costumed crime. Sometimes meteors hit the city and sometimes aliens invade. You really don't want to live in Marvel New York. Out in Oklahoma there's also Broxton, which was a normal rural town until the Norse Gods decided to set their home, Asgard, down on top of it. Now there's a giant golden city floating over it and they have to deal with all the nonsense that comes from living near Gods.
While the Earth is mostly the same, Marvel's version of outer space is very different. There are an unsure number of alien species living outside the Earth, estimated to be somewhere in the hundreds. Most of them go unnoticed and cause no problems for the people living on Earth. This is not the case for the Skrulls, a warlike race of shapeshifters who have had two different wars on Earth and tried to invade several times. They also kidnapped a group of superheroes from Earth at one point to run experiments on them. They have caused more problems for Earth than probably any other alien race out there. Also well known to the Earth are the Kree, a militaristic race of blue aliens who cause significantly less trouble the Skrulls but still have participated in wars on Earth. Carol is actually half-Kree due to an accident that altered her DNA. Then there's the Shi'ar, who look sort of like human-bird hybrids and generally stay off of Earth completely but have had conflicts in the past with the Kree and the Skrulls. Carol had run ins with them during her time as a space pirate with the Starjammers and still speaks their language. There's also the Brood, an insect like race that uses Earth to hunt. They sometimes capture Earthlings for experimentation too, which is what happened to Carol before her Binary powers came in. All these races have their own planets, along with the planets that are traditionally found in our solar system.
The moon of the Marvel universe is also different from ours. The Inhumans, a race who are not humans but also not mutants, live there in their own city. They are generally isolated from most others races and do not appreciate people just stumbling into their territory. There's also an artificial environment on the moon that makes it liveable for humans, though no one actually lives there. Basically outer space in the Marvel universe is a giant, crazy, confusing place full of known life. Some alien species live peacefully on Earth, some stay on their own planet and some feel the need to be giant dicks and constantly cause conflict with the Earth. Either way, the existence of aliens is generally pretty well accepted. Or at least it is but the superhero population. Some civilians still have problems accepting it, despite the number of them who have actually seen it for themselves.
Science in the Marvel universe also tends to be both incredibly advanced and complete bullshit. It rarely makes any sense and you kind of just have to nod your head and go along with it. Space travel is an easy and normal thing, at least for superheroes. The Avengers frequently go casually into space and people from other planets often casually go to Earth. People can grow and shrink with the use of Pym Particles, though their creator Hank Pym tries his best to keep them to himself. Alternate universes and pocket dimensions exist and are known about. Limbo is an example of this, a pocket universe where time stands still that Carol was once dragged to. Weapons are ridiculously advanced and medicine is being advanced too with the use of various technologies like the Pym Particles. Dinosaurs still exist in the Savage Land, people are cloned and mind controlled like it's no big deal and there's even a drug known as MGH (Mutant Growth Hormone) that gives normal people powers for a limited time. The Super Soldier Serum was created in the 1940s and turns normal humans into perfect, near superhuman physical specimens with enhanced strength and durability. The Infinity Formula is capable of actually making anyone who takes it immortal, though it's rare and the people who have it keep the fact that they have it a secret. Every bit of technology in the Marvel universe is more advanced than it is in our universe, including the planes. Robots and artificial intelligence are a pretty common thing, including robots who have such an advanced AI that they can experience emotions and learn and evolve over time.
Then there's magic, which is even more bullshit and makes even less sense than Marvel's science. The Scarlet Witch is one of the most powerful magic users in the universe and was actually able to completely rewrite reality. She was able to magically create herself twin sons because she wanted them so badly. Doctor Strange, who is up there with the Scarlet Witch, does basically whatever he wants with his magic. He can heal, pull souls from bodies, teleport, summon demons.....you name it, he can probably do it. There are other magic users too who operate on a much smaller scale with spells and hexes. Most people agree that it's really best not to mess with magic and just leave it to the people who know what the hell they're doing.
Personality:
To put it mildly, Carol is just a little bit ridiculous. She has a very strong silly side that causes her to sometimes do things that are a little over the top. Things like getting out her laptop and playing Bejeweled when she should be setting up her office or naming her cat after Chewbacca. She's the one who's usually making jokes during fights with criminals or otherwise saying silly things, like calling a criminal rude for punching her while she was on the phone or accusing them of ruining her costume. She just tries to enjoy herself when on routine calls like bank robberies of small time criminals waving weapons around. She enjoys her job and it shows in how relaxed and almost comical she can be while doing it.
On the other hand, she's also able to be serious when the situation calls for it. If something big is going down, a war or an alien invasion, she is capable of setting the joking and humor aside to do what needs to be done. Making sure the problem is contained and any civilians are safe is always priority number one. When something big goes down she is focused on that and that only, anything else will just have to wait. She wants to be the best hero that she can possibly be and that means getting the job done. Even if it means she might get hurt or destroy some property, as long as things work out in the end and she keeps others safe that's all that matters. Sometimes she's a little too sure of herself or she rushes in without thinking but when she realizes she's done that she tries to step back and think things out better. Generally though she manages to get through it and do what she needs to do. It may not always be done in the cleanest or most efficient or even the safest way, but she does it.
That's not to say that she always keeps her head in bad situations because she doesn't. She tries her hardest but sometimes she just does things that may not be the smartest choices. She has a bit of a temper and every so often that ends up controlling her, causing her to make mistakes and sometimes kill a villain or two. She tries to keep her head clear, to plan things out, but sometimes she just gets so worked up that she just rushes in and blows things up. She's aware that she does this and she's working on it. She loses her temper in normal situations too so if someone makes her mad, you'll know right away. The only good thing about this is that she at least doesn't hide things. She tells it like it is and you always know where you stand with her. Even if you're one of her friends, who she loves to death, she will tell you how she really feels.
She's an open book who is just sort of terrible at hiding her feelings, especially the really strong ones. If she's angry, you will know right away. If she's sad, you will know right away. If she's happy, you will know right away. She's just not someone who can lock her feelings away, she has to let them out and has to talk about them. That's not to say that she actually deals with these feelings well because sometimes she just really doesn't. Sometimes she's prone to do things like locking herself in a room to cry, punching people in the face, blasting people in the crotch, running off into space so she doesn't have to deal with anything or sleeping with teammates because she just wants to forget about things for a while. She's made some pretty poor decisions due to her emotions, she knows that, and it's another thing she's working on. She's also the kind of person who is always questioning if they have the kind of life they want, if they're doing things right, if they need to change, but she always ends up deciding that she's happy with the way things are after thinking about it for a while.
She tries hard to be a good person and cares a lot about what people think of her, though that still doesn't keep her from doing what she thinks is right. Sometimes she does unpopular things because she knows it's what she has to do and still gets upset later when people get angry at her. In the past she's had to do things like arresting friends, only to later be very hurt when said friends were angry at her and going so far as letting them go. She just wants the world to be a better place and for everyone to be happy, even though she knows that's probably not really possible. It hurts her when her decisions upset people but, at the same time, she has to do what's right. As long as things are right and just, even if other people don't see it that way, everything is okay. She can always work on making the people she's upset feel better when all is said and done.
On top of this, she tends to care about things very intensely, whether it be another person or a cause. Her friends are very important to her and she is fiercely protective of them. The closer she is to them, the more she'd be willing to do to help them. People who hurt those she's close to will not be tolerated and she isn't afraid to punish anyone who crosses that line. She's the kind of person who punches a bad guy in the face after he surrenders just because he kidnapped one of her close friends. The point being, Carol really loves her friends and it's a bad idea to mess with them.
As far as how she'd handle being in a place between life, death and dreaming...she'd most likely just shrug it off. Her life is weird and she's come to accept it. Besides, it wouldn't be the first time she ended up in a weird universe. After the time Marcus took her to Limbo and the whole House of M reality, this is nothing. At the very least she has some freedom this time and there isn't a big bad who she has to punch. She'll be thankful for that because, as much as she likes punching things, it get tiring after a while.
Appearance:
Carol is basically an Amazon, standing at 5'11" and weighing 145 pounds. Her frame is solid and muscular, but not enough to make her look bulky, due to time spent in the military and constant physical activity. She has long blonde that is for the most part straight and blue eyes. Her costume is basically a black swimsuit with a lightning bolt on it, thigh high boots, gloves and a red sash around her waist. When out of costume she pretty much wears whatever's comfortable, usually t-shirts and jeans.
Abilities:
-Superhuman strength: She is typically able to lift and hold about 50 tons of weight. When used with her other powers she can increase her own strength so she is able to lift a maximum of 100 tons.
-Superhuman speed: Capable of running or flying at extremely high speeds that a normal human isn't able to achieve. There is no maximum measure for how fast she can go, but in the past she's been shown to make a 700 mile trip in about two hours while flying at top speed.
-Superhuman durability: Her body tissues are harder than an average human, making her very difficult to injure. Bullets bounce right off of her, she can take extremely hard hits without getting injured, fall from great heights and survive, survive in extremely high temperatures and even survive explosions. In the past she's also been able to make it in and out of the Earth's atmosphere without much trouble. She also heals much faster than a normal human when she's injured.
-Superhuman agility: Her reflexes, balance and coordination are enhanced like more of her body's abilities. They are described as being well above that of even the most skilled athlete.
-Flight: She can fly at extremely high speeds, about the same as an average jet, while on Earth. Her flight is slowed a bit while in space but is still enough for her to be able to get around.
-Molecular control: She can manipulate the energy in her body to change back and forth between her costume and normal clothes instantly. She even has full control over what the clothes she changes into from her costume look like, meaning she can instantly have just about any outfit she wants.
-Photon blasts: She can concentrate energy in her hands and fingertips, turning it into powerful blasts. This is usually her main mode of combat.
-Energy absorption: Her body is capable of temporarily absorbing several types of energy (electricity, nuclear energy, etc.) and using that energy to enhance her own abilities, such as her strength. She can also take this energy and throw it right back at the person who threw it at her in the form of enhanced energy blasts.
-Multilingual: Carol is fluent in several languages including English, Russian, Arabic and at one point spoke Chinese, though she herself says she's rusty. She can also speak the languages of the Kree and Shi'ar alien races. On top of that, she has a limited vocabulary in several other unnamed languages.
-Expert pilot: She was trained by the United States Air force and can fly several different types of planes. These includes military fighters, jets and several kinds of alien ships.
-Military combat training: While in the military she was trained in several different types of hand to hand combat. These include boxing, Brazilian jujitsu, muay thai, judo and escrima. She is also trained in the use of firearms and other military issue weaponry.
Inventory:
Nothing but the clothes she's wearing. She doesn't really carry things around with her.
Suite:
A suite of any size in the fire sector would be preferable. She's pretty quick tempered herself and she's used to being in a place with a lot of action so she'd fit right in.
In-Character Samples:
Third Person:
When you think of superheroes, you probably think of someone who is always moving. Someone who's strong, determined and just never stops. Someone who would never spend a perfectly decent Saturday stretched out on their sofa eating ice cream and marathoning the Harry Potter movies. At least this is the typical image of a superhero, one that would be incredibly inaccurate in the case of Ms. Marvel. At least for today it's inaccurate. Generally she is all the things described above and more, or at least she likes to think she is. She likes to think that she's someone who makes a difference, gets things done and can be looked to for a good example. Today, however, Carol is doing the Harry Potter thing because why not? It's not like she has anything better to do right now. That and everyone needs a day to just be lazy once in a while, right? Besides, she hasn't seen the first Harry Potter movie in forever and this pint of ice cream isn't going to eat itself.
Not that either of those things are exactly vital but they're what she's doing. Maybe they're vital to her sanity, what's left of it at least, who can really say. If someone wants her to do something they should really say so soon since she's dangerously close to being completely comfortable this way. Also her pint of ice cream is about half gone, which really can't be healthy, but it's chocolate fudge and so good. Tony paid for it so it's not like she even wasted her own money on something that she's going to finish off in one sitting. This is about the point Jessica would be teasing her for being a lump but, oh look, Jessica isn't around. Which for now Carol is thankful for because she doesn't want to share her ice cream. The chocolately goodness is all hers and no one can tell her otherwise. Although, she would like it if Jess were here because then she could make her say quotes from the movie. It's much more amusing when Jessica does it and she's not even really sure why. It's probably the accent. No, it's definitely the accent.
Eventually the ice cream is gone and the movie gets boring, leaving Carol to sigh loudly and hang half off the couch. "Maybe this is a sign that I should actually get up from the couch." But like hell that's happening. Instead she settles for continuing to hang off the couch and watching her cat wander around the room. It'd be fun to be a cat. To have no cares in the world because someone else provides everything you need. When you think about it, being an Avenger is kind of like being Tony's cat, since he gives them everything they need. Though...that's kind of an awkward train of thought so maybe she should just stop. Seriously, Carol, get off your ass. Your mind goes to weird places when you're not doing anything.
"Okay, yeah, time to get up." She rolls gracelessly to the floor and just lays there for a minute, staring at the ceiling, before finally standing and stretching her arms above her head. "Better go find something at least a little constructive to do before I lose what few marbles I have left. Also I should probably stop talking to myself."
World class superhero, right here. It's Saturday, sue her. She's allowed to be lazy on Saturday.
Network:
[Carol is seated in front of her console, in civvies, looking a little dishevelled and more than a little annoyed. Today has not been her favorite day so far]
So. Alternate universes are a bitch, huh? You would think the universe would have decided by now that this has happened to me enough but I guess not. Oh well, what can you do? [Shrug]
Anyway, alternate universe and unpleasant welcome aside, my name's Carol. Nice to meet you guys. Let's just get this out of the way first: How many people here are from Earth? Better yet, who here has heard of the Avengers, the X Men or Captain America? Or who knows anything about superheroes at all, even if it's not any of the things I just mentioned. Or maybe aliens. I'll take aliens too, provided they aren't the green shape shifting variety. Not real big on those.
[She pauses and glances off to the side before turning back to the console]
Unrelated but can the fires around here actually burn things? Just for reference before I shove my hand into it. [She's curious, okay]
